Sewing Tip of the Week

Tips on Sewing Lingerie

Question: Thanks for replying to my e-mail so soon! Yes, I would love some tips on sewing lingerie i.e. on sewing with Lycra, inserting stretch lace panels, needles, measuring elastic etc.

Answers:

TIP # 1: I always use a #10 ball point needle for knits, Lycra and stretch lace.

TIP # 2: For measuring the elastic, it will fit the best if you wrap it around your waist, leg or ribs so that is it comfortable. Do not add extra for the seam allowances or overlap, because when you sew the elastic to the Lycra it will stretch a little.

TIP # 3: For more tips you should look at the following tips in our sewing tips archives.

TIP # 4: In the industry, we use a flatlock machine to sew the stretch lace inserts. However, if you don't have a Flatlock on your machine you can use a twin needle. Some of the decorative reverse action stitches on a home sewing machine work well too. Whatever stitch you choose needs to be able to stretch so your stitches won't pop when the fabric stretches.

Congratulations! You have just learned more new techniques!
