Tip #1: When you work with knits, especially if they contain Lycra, it is important to let the fabric sit for at least an hour before you layout your pattern and cut it. This will allow the fibers to relax and the fabric will shrink back to it's original memory (If you are patient enough to wait overnight, that's even better!).
Tip #2:Cutting is also very important, so be sure that you cut accurately and don't stretch the fabric as you go. Rotary cutters are great for cutting knits for that reason. Don't forget to mark all of your notches and dots accurately too. Your garment will go together much easier if you do.
Tip #3:When you are working with Lycra/ Spandex fabrics, it is important to remember that the greatest stretch goes around the body. Check the direction of the greatest stretch before you layout and cut the fabric. Often times you will lay the patterns out on the cross grain on Lycra/Spandex fabrics.
Tip #4:When interfacing is required on a knit fabric, be sure to use a knit interfacing that is the right weight for your fabric. Follow the manufacturers instructions for correct application of fusible interfacing.
Tip #5:When sewing buttonholes on knits, they should be sewn horizontally. Always use interfacing under the buttonholes & buttons to prevent them from pulling through.
