How to Sew Polo or Rugby Collars in Three Simple Steps:

To make the binding, cut a 1"strip of self fabric at least 1" longer than the collar along the grainline. Trim the neck seam on the shirt to 1/4" seam allowance.

Please note; it is very important to cut and sew all seams accurately.

After you sew the shoulder seams:

Step 1: Lay the collar face up on the right side of the shirt, matching center fronts and center back notch. (To find the center back of the polo collar, fold it in half and mark it with a pin). With right sides together, fold the placket facings over the collar and then sew the collar to the shirt with 1/4" seam allowances.

Step 2: Lay the binding over the neck seam, and sew it through all layers with 1/4" seam allowance, making sure the binding extends over the edges of the front placket facings.

Step 3: Wrap the binding around the seam allowance, fold it down over the seam and sew along the edge of the binding to the shirt. Turn the facings right sides out.

Finish the shirt as usual. That's all there is to it!
